Chieko Garling - Pianist/Composer
Born in Japan, she moved into the Chicago area to study jazz composition at Roosevelt University. While in college, she started to perform professionally at many venues as a jazz pianist. After graduation, she continued her study with classical pianists, mainly with Dr Michael Yanovitsky and Dr Janis Razaq. Her versatile repertoire includes not only jazz standards, pop, but also many compositions by Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin.
In 2014, she opened a music school in her hometown, Arlington Heights, IL, with a hope to spread her unique method to broader students. Her pedagogical approach is based on her experience studying deeply both jazz improvisation and classical music. It teaches how to capture music in a way that improvisers do, and also to apply it to other genre such as classical and pop. She has been developing a series of piano educational books and compositions with helps by the teachers at her school.
